The Center for Healthy Living and Longevity, with multiple locations in the Metro Detroit area (and beyond) of Michigan, offers prescription natural hormone replacement for both women and men. Operating from a standpoint of “functional medicine,” every new client’s symptoms are assessed and a plan devised to understand the underlying root of their conditions. The Centers’ specialty is prescription natural hormone replacement. Once an individual’s hormone levels are restored to an optimal level, skin texture and appearance often improve, as does memory, and weight management is more easily attained. Clients can also receive a tailor-made vitamin regimen to boost their nutrition.

The Center has the following Michigan locations (specific addresses at the end of this post, and on the longevity medicine map):

Ann Arbor

Bloomfield Hills

Gaylord

Grosse Pointe Farms

Kalamazoo

Madison Heights

Petoskey

Rochester

Saginaw

Traverse City

West Bloomfield

Let’s profile one of the Centers’ doctors…

Dr. Keri Topouzian is a partner at The Center for Healthy Living & Longevity located in Bloomfield Hills, Grosse Pointe and Saginaw, Michigan. He received his degree in osteopathic medicine from the University of Health Sciences, Kansas City, Mo. in 1982. Dr. Topouzian spent 10 years practicing alternative medicine and is specializing in natural hormone replacement therapies and functional medicine that seeks to go to the underlying origins of a client’s symptoms. Dr. Topouzian is board-certified in emergency medicine through the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine, American Board of Emergency Medicine and with the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine.

Clients have sought the Centers’ help for lowering cholesterol without drug therapy. Cancer and diabetes patients receive nutritional support to help them during their treatments.

To explain a bit about what the Centers do, it’s worth first answering the question: what is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine was a phrase developed in 1993 and has three distinct hallmarks:

Every patient is unique. Given this, the treatment is unique and takes into account of that client’s specific conditions and symptoms. There is no “cookie cutter” approach of prescribing drugs for a particular condition, such as diabetes.

Proper care requires a holistic approach to assessment and treatment. In alignment with treating every client as unique, assessment and treatment is prescribed according to an individual’s work, life habits, religious beliefs and health habits. Doing this allows physician and functional medicine practitioners (such as nurses, nutritionists, other medical staff), to provide appropriate methods of treatment.

There must be an emphasis on preventive health. In functional medicine, clients are encouraged to take an overall preventative approach to their health. Regular screening tests, maintaining good health habits such as eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise are emphasized, to ward off the onset of chronic diseases such as diabetes or heart disease.

Comprehensive Laboratory Summary

Vision Screening

Audiometry

At WellMax, specific advanced medical screening is available, including tests to assess the health of the following:

Carotid arteries: Carotid arteries supply blood to the brain. If there is any plaque present, that presents a risk for stroke. There are several options for reducing excessive plaque. An imaging test can screen for this stroke risk.

Uterus and ovaries: Ultrasound can be used to ascertain the thickness of the uterine lining, or endometrium. Doing this allows doctors to determine if there are any abnormalities that may signal illness or pathology. Ovarian cancer can be screened early on so that there is a greater chance for successful treatment.

Prostate: An ultrasound of the prostate provides doctors information about the prostate size, shape and structure. Bladder imaging can also be performed to determine the amount of urine that remains after voiding—which varies according to the size of the prostate.

Bone density testing: Utilizing state-of-the-art Hologics 4500W bone densitometry equipment, DEXA bone density measurements are taken as a whole body scan; at the vertebral column and several landmarks of the hip. Body fat content testing for different areas of the body can also be performed.

Whole body MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): This comprehensive screening allows clients and their physicians to see in dramatic relief, the interior landscape of the body, from the brain, to kidneys, to lungs—without harmful radiation.

Whole Body MR Angiography (MRA): An MRA is an MRI of the blood vessels, again, without radiation. This test screens for heart disorders such as Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), renal artery disease that could lead to hypertension, stroke, and blood vessel diseases. Specialized computer software is used in conjunction with detailed imaging of the coronary arteries of the heart, to determine a “calcium score.” This score correlates with the amount of atherosclerotic plaque in the coronary arteries. In general, the higher the calcium score, the greater risk of a heart attack. It does not require any needles or probing.

In addition to running the Healthsmart Medical Center, he is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Miami, Nova University and Barry University.

The Healthsmart Center offers several diagnostic tests to assess every patient’s specific health concern:

DXA Osteoporosis Testing: Designed to assess a patient’s spine, hip, and wrist to determine risks for fractures.

Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound: This exam enables technicians to assess heart disease risk that may eliminate the need for more invasive testing. These include a number of sonographic exams that evaluate the heart muscle and valves, internal organs, blood flow to extremities and genitals to detect any pathology.

Interpretive Electrocardiogram: Progressive, gender-specific electrocardiogram to assess the different criteria for the male and female heart.

Holter Monitor: This exam is to detect any irregularities in heart beats in a 24- or 48-hour timeframe.

Advanced Exercise Cardiac Stress Testing: An exam to note readiness for exercise as well as evaluating any heart abnormalities during physical exertion testing.

High Frequency X-ray: The advantage of a high frequency x-ray is that is provides a complex array of information with reduced amount of time for the patient to be exposed to radiation.

Pulmonary Function Study and Blood Oxygenation Tests: Determines function of the lungs and content of the oxygen in the blood.

Hearing Test: As a preventative tool, this test is to detect any hearing loss early on to improve treatment outcome.

Blood-Drawing Station: Several detailed blood panels can be performed, including those for evaluating hormonal levels, risk for cardiopulmonary disease, any precursors for cancer, as a nutritional analysis and more.

Marina Johnson, M.D., F.A.C.E., practices functional medicine and is board certified in endocrinology and metabolism and internal medicine. Trained at UCLA and USC, she has been in private practice since 1986. She now treats menopause, andropause, depression, hypothyroidism and chronic insomnia in a practice that focuses on preventative medicine.

Previously a practicing pharmacist, Dr. Johnson is able to offer clients bio-identical hormones to bring patients back to health and reduce symptoms normally associated with aging such as lowered sex drive, weight gain, “fuzzy thinking,” and a sluggish metabolism.

Her philosophy in applying functional medicine is to seek the root causes of an illness rather than suppress its symptoms. This may mean discovering a decline in certain hormonal levels that can be treated to bring the client back to wellness. Dr. Johnson specializes in treating andropause (male menopause), thyroid disorders, PMS and growth hormone deficiency in adults. She also provides preventative protocols for heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

While physicians are required to complete 12.5 hours of continuing medical education (CME) every year, Dr. Johnson often attends more than 100 hours a year in programs in endocrinology, preventive and functional medicine.

Bio-identical hormone therapy (BIHT): Bio-identical hormone therapy provides hormones that the body will recognize. Custom formulas can be made and BIHT also involves the use of the following pharmaceutical products: Alora, Climara, Estragel, Estrasor and Vivelle.

Perimenopause: Women in their late 30s and more commonly in their 40s, often experience perimenopause and experience symptoms to those found in menopause. These women benefit frequently from treatments of progesterone as they are not estrogen-poor.

Effects of long-term estrogen deficiency: As important as they are, nutritional and herbal therapies do not protect women from the ill effects of long-term estrogen deficiency. Symptoms include loss of bladder tone, vaginal dryness that can disrupt a health physical relationship, lowered libido, osteoporosis, risk for Alzheimer’s disease, Dowager’s hump (spinal shortening and curvature), hair loss and loss of skin elasticity.

BIHT can address all of these symptoms if a woman is treated by a qualified physician. A French study done in 2002 with 3175 women taking oral progesterone and wearing transdermal estradiol for 8.9 years showed no increased risk for breast cancer. Dr. Johnson has personally treated over 5,000 menopausal women. She has been prescribing bio-identical hormones for 20 years.

The Women’s Health Initiative: The Women’s Health Initiative was a long-term study that showed increased risk for breast cancer, heart disease, and stroke for women taking Prempro, a combination of Premarin and Provera. These products are made from the urine or pregnant mares. (Is it any wonder that equine urine was not tolerated by women?) In BIHT, bio-identical hormones such as estradiol and progesterone are very different products that are more likely to be assimilated by the body. As with any endocrine treatment, there are possible side effects but it is important to remember that left untreated, declines in these hormones puts an individual at increased risk for chronic diseases.

Andropause: Testosterone levels may start to decline in a man’s 40’s and 50’s. Unlike menopause in women, andropause in men can be reversed with the use of BIHT.

Rather than believe that people’s hormone levels decline because of aging, they believe we age because hormone levels drop.

The principles of aging center around glycation or sugar metabolism, inflammation, oxidation and metylation (abnormal gene expression). Hormone replacement therapies (HRT) enable people to remain youthful by retarding the aging process.

The mission behind the Longevity Center of the Rockies is to help improve the quality of people’s lives as they grow older.

Dr. Ben Magsamen began his medical career in the early 1960s, as an orthopedic surgeon. He is one of the founders of Orthopedic Center of the Rockies in Fort Collins, Colorado, and has had a lifelong interest in health. His current emphasis is to help people remain independent for as long as possible.

Every client is given a complete evaluation that includes several tests and studies to determine the individual’s health issues. A family medical history is taken, as is a record of one’s exercise and eating habits. Other information we record includes body fat and safety and health risks.

The Longevity Center commonly asks patients to seek out another facility to get the following tests:

bone density scan

cardiac stress test

pulmonary function test

specialized studies of blood chemistry to determine hormone status

After a complete evaluation of all factors, patients will receive specific recommendations in diet and supplementation and if HRT is appropriate for them.

Those clients specifically seeking an anti-aging program will receive a physical exercise plan, often with the supplementation of human growth hormone (HGH). For many clients, risks for a fall and resulting injury is a serious concern. To prevent falls, the Center recommend clients take yoga or tai chi lessons to gain the physical balance and confidence to not fall as they grow older.

It is important to remember the value of sleep. During the REM stage of sleep, the body produces HGH. Production of this hormone drops in the body after the age of 30 and if a physician has determined an abnormally low level in the client, HRT may be one option.

The Institute recommends mental exercise as another vital component of anti-aging medicine. Another prominent hormone, DHEA, can decrease as we age, and practices such as prayer, meditation and especially transcendental meditation all help the body produce DHEA.

After the client assessment, dietary recommendations are also given.

Before a client is placed on HRT, he or she undergoes medical tests to determine if this kind of supplementation is needed. Additional tests such as cardic stress test, bone density test as well as those specifically designed to determine where a client’s hormone levels are at. Follow-up blood tests are strongly recommended if HRT is prescribed.

Eli J. Hammer, M.D., is the Medical Director and founder of the Hammer Institute For Anti-Aging Medicine. Dr. Hammer, received his BSE in biomedical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and earned his medical degree from Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey in 1986. He completed his Family Practice residency in 1989 at Phoenix Baptist Hospital in Phoenix. For more than 10 years, he operated a successful Family Medicine practice in Scottsdale, Arizona before opening the Hammer Institute to exclusively practice Anti-Aging Medicine in 2000.

In its practice of anti-aging medicine, The Hammer Institute functions with these goals for their clients:

•	to improve current health
•	prevent age-related diseases
•	improve an individual’s quality of life

Towards this end, anti-aging medicine, then, has four components:
1.	Maintaining healthy nutritional habits
2.	Cultivating regular, moderate exercise
3.	Maintaining appropriate nutritional supplementation
4.	Undergoing HRT with bio-identical hormones for optimal results

At the Hammer Institute, anti-aging medicine might be summed up as the following practices:
1.	Healthy diet habits
2.	Proper exercise routine
3.	Optimal nutritional supplementation
4.	Bio-identical hormone restoration

All clients receive a complimentary 30-minute consultation with Dr. Hammer, to determine what the health issues and goals are for each client and if anti-aging medicine is the appropriate way to address those concerns.

Next, the patient undergoes a comprehensive battery of tests to measure hormones, markers for diseases, a chemistry profile and blood cell count.

This evaluation includes family medical history, physical exam (although breast and pelvic exams are not performed at the institute), and body fat composition.

Later, a special program is created for each patient based on this evaluation. The program may include HRT, changes to diet, exercise, nutritional supplementation and any other additional testing.

Dr. Hammer conducts a patient follow-up every 3 months with blood tests to see how the body is responding to the HRT program. Maintenance checkups may be done at 6 to 12 months.

Bioidentical hormones used in the program might include human growth hormone (HGH), testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, thyroid, DHEA, Pregnalone, melatonin and cortisol.
