Billing itself as the largest alternative medicine clinic in the U.S., the Whitaker Wellness Institute, founded in 1979 in Newport Beach, California, offers a number of anti-aging and disease preventive therapies, in addition to pain relief, therapeutic and recovery, and alternative relaxation regimens.
Headed by Dr Julian Whitaker and staffed by 10 physicians and medical professionals, the Whitaker Wellness Institute team has been offering several preventive and therapeutic alternative and integrative medical therapies to thousands of patients and clients from Southern California and around the world. Its anti-aging regimens center around natural hormone replacement therapies (including testosterone, estrogen, human growth hormone [HGH], DHEA and thyroid), although it offers several other treatments for:
- cardiovascular disease (chelation, enhanced external counterpulsation [EECP])
- pain relief (prolotherapy, anodyne, reflexology, acupuncture)
- healing and recovery (hyperbaric oxygen, intravenous [IV])
- wellness (exercise and nutritional counseling, skin care, therapeutic massage)
Whitaker is one of the pioneers in the field using EECP, chelation, IV, hyperbaric oxygen and prolotherapy, since several of its competitors don’t currently offer these services.
Fees? Whitaker claims to have more competitive rates than Chopra, Pritikin, Cooper, Ornish and MacDougal, with its signature one-week program costing $3,060 currently. Two- and three-week extensions are also available for a modest increase, and they will help locate you lodging if you’re coming in from out of town. Their full fee list details prices for everything from acupuncture ($120 per treatment) to a 60-minute aromatherapy wrap ($85). They provide assistance with billing if you have private insurance.
Tip: If you get even a “Sustaining Member” membership of the Whitaker Health Freedom Foundation, your $350 annual fee includes a $250 certificate for use at the Whitaker Wellness Institute. So, if you plan on using WWI’s services, the effective $100 annual fee at WHFF will get you Foundation newsletters and updates, and a recorded presentation by Dr Whitaker.
